While small companies struggle in this economy, two Maryland businesses are experiencing growth through strong customer service and high-quality products.

Both companies provide information technology solutions for its clients. This technology is fueling their growth, but they are expanding because of their customer service.

Seeds of Genius Is a Growing Woman-Owned Business

Seeds of Genius, a Small Business Administration-certified small business based in Columbia, Md., is a government supplier that plans to create eight new high-tech jobs by year end, said Congetta Kelley, company founder and president. In addition, the company is preparing to lease additional office space that will more than double its current size. Seeds of Genius has added six engineers and one outside sales representative since the start of 2009. The company’s plan is to add seven additional engineering support positions and a program manager this year.

Kelley founded the company in 2004. In its first year, its sales volume was $1.75 million. The company is on track to realize about $15 million in sales volume for 2009. Seeds of Genius strives to be the industry benchmark for a small, woman-owned business, Kelley said. The company combines industry experience with a unique enthusiasm to make it a successful technology company leader in the federal marketplace.

“Our explosive growth comes from our successful, long-standing customer relationships with governmental agencies,” Kelley said. “As a Sun Microsystems authorized reseller, we offer our clients core competencies developed around information technology solutions combined with customer-driven personal service and a high-quality of product.”

Co-OpTek Creates Interface for Inventory Database

According to Co-OpTek’s President Paul Phillips, his company’s growth stems from its size. He can provide strong customer service that large companies can’t offer. Often medium-sized companies do not have information technology departments or are behind on a project. They call Co-OpTek for help. He can step into a project and complete it quickly with great customer service.

For example, he completed an e-commerce solution for Assemblers Inc., Sterling, Va. The company needed a real-time ordering and inventory management system over the Internet. Co-OpTek created innovative software and interface applications while adhering to strict deadlines.

“Co-OpTek really listened to me and what’s more, understood how I wanted to run my business,” said Nasr Chaudhry, Assemblers chief executive officer.
